Recently, I had a friend whose hard drive crashed for the 2nd time in a year. He had to pay several hundred dollars for computer repair and data recovery. It really could have been avoid by having either an external hard drive backup or online backup. Both are very very inexpensive and are essential to a law practice. Can you spell m.a.l.p.r.a.c.t.i.c.e?
A external hard drive and case can be found EASILY for under $100. Then you can use a program, I prefer SyncToy, but there are many others, to sync your data onto the external hard drive seemless.
As for online backup, there are free ones like Adrive. Mozy is a popular one. They offer 2GB free, but you will probably want to go with a paid subscription. There are many others. I personally use Dell. Although, it is not the best. It is inexpensive and does what I need. The best part of online backups is that that they can be scheduled backups.
I highly suggest both an external and online. They online you can schedule for a weeknight backup everyday while you sync the external at least once a week. Also, the external is portable which comes in handy sometimes.
Also a very important thing to remember. If you have a desktop and the CPU is on the floor, clean the fan in the back!!! Dust will get into them and only bad things will happen. Buy a can of compressed air and clean it out every month or so!!!
UPDATE: Just discovered that MOzy gives a discount to my state bar association. If you sign up to Mozy, check with your bar membership benefits to see if you also get a discount.
